Unattended Minors

The library welcomes patrons of all ages and encourages everyone to use our programs, services, and resources. Responsibility for the safety and behavior of minors rests with the parent, guardian, or assigned adult caregiver — not with library staff. Staff cannot act in place of a parent or guardian. The library has guidelines for staff to follow when assisting unattended minors.

Age Guidelines

  • Children through age 7 should have a parent or caregiver within eyesight, unless the child is participating in a library program.
  • Children age 8 and older may use the library unattended for a length of time appropriate to their age and maturity.
  • Occasionally, children age 7 or younger may need to wait at the library after school, either alone or with older siblings.

Disruptive Behavior

Staff will address disruptions caused by children who appear to be unaccompanied. Children displaying inappropriate or destructive behavior will be reminded of library rules. If the behavior continues, the child may be asked to leave the library.

If a child is unaccompanied and, in the judgment of staff, is too young to leave safely on their own, staff may attempt to contact a parent, guardian, or caregiver. Police may be contacted if the situation requires assistance.

Parents or guardians are responsible for damage to library materials or equipment caused by their minor child.

Unattended Minors at Closing Time

A child will not be left outside the library alone at closing time. Staff will attempt to contact a parent, guardian, or caregiver for up to 15 minutes after closing. If no contact can be made, staff will call the police to assume responsibility for the unattended child.
